A Leader in the Making
PCDT GABRIEL Z GARCIA
The book "True North" emphasizes the importance of authentic leadership, which involves being true to oneself rather than conforming to a particular leadership model. The book presents examples of successful leaders who have experienced doubt and challenges and highlights the importance of using personal experiences to benefit the organization.
The book cites the example of Howard Schultz, who founded Starbucks based on his personal experiences and vision of creating a company that valued and respected its employees, regardless of their background. Schultz's decision to offer healthcare to part-time employees was motivated by his father's lack of access to healthcare, and his experiences drove him to create a company aligned with his values.
The book emphasizes that authentic leadership involves understanding one's personal story and using it to guide one's leadership approach. Successful leaders can re-imagine their life stories and leadership around their passions and purpose and use their experiences to inspire and lead others.
In today's fast-paced and constantly evolving business world, it can be challenging to maintain authenticity and remain true to oneself while leading a large organization. However, the book provides a positive outlook and shows that authentic leadership is possible through understanding one's personal story and using it to drive the organization toward success.
As future leaders, the book encourages us to be true to ourselves and to use our personal experiences to inspire and guide our approach to leadership. By doing so, we can create a more meaningful and fulfilling work environment and drive their organization toward success.
We had a series of discussions about leadership with PLTCOL Ryan Manongdo to guide us in our career path as we leave the portals of the Academy. One of our topics is about how to lead and make a movement. We watched a short video of a dancing guy, and we were able to dissect some lessons. We had discussed leadership and making a move.
First, a leader must be courageous to initiate a task or work towards a specific goal. This is difficult because you have no one to work with to accomplish your task. But when the first follower came, the only thing that he needed to do was to show other people how to follow. Now they can work together to recruit as many people as possible.
The second follower will emerge at this stage and serve as the turning point. By doing this, the movement that they have initiated will form a crowd. It must be in public to be witnessed by outsiders to emulate more followers. When many join the movement, it will result in momentum. After all of these, a movement has been successful.
As a leader, I first need to know myself and discover my strengths and weaknesses. There are a lot of things that I need to improve to become a competent and credible leader. Next, be a leader that is easy to follow. A leader must learn how to connect easily with his people to build a strong relationship that would result in better outcomes.
I have realized that there will be no movement if there is no first follower. The best way to create a movement is to show others how to follow. We do not all need to be leaders. We need a strong leader with the courage and competency to lead the movement in achieving the desired goals.
The story is about Augustus Landor, a retired detective, asked by the military to investigate the death of Cadet Leroy Fry at West Point. Landor finds evidence that suggests Fry was murdered and enlists the help of Edgar Allan Poe, who shows interest in the case.
Landor and Poe investigate the issue and discover a possible connection to black magic rituals. As they delve deeper into the matter, two more cadets go missing, and their bodies are later found mutilated. Landor and Poe suspect Dr. Daniel Marquis's family, who was involved in the investigation of Fry's death.
Landor finds evidence that implicates Dr. Marquis in the murders, who had resorted to black magic to cure his daughter Lea's seizures. Poe is enchanted by Lea and volunteers to do whatever she wants but ends up being drugged and nearly killed. Landor saves Poe, and Lea and Artemus die in a fire.
After the case is solved, Poe confronts Landor with his realization that the handwriting on the note fragment found in Fry's hand matches Landor's writing. It is revealed that Landor was the killer and had been seeking revenge for his daughter's rape by Fry, Ballinger, and Stoddard. Traumatized by his daughter's suicide, Landor had left the note for Fry and hung him.
The story shows the consequences of seeking revenge and how it can lead to tragedy. As future Public Safety Officers, we shall be the enforcers of the law and guardians of peace. It highlights the importance of seeking justice through the legal system rather than taking matters into one's own hands. The story also shows how far a person can go to protect their loved ones and whether revenge is justifiable.
